The Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS) made its first television in 17th November 2019. The aim of this program is to share how youths can contribute proactively on climate change. Here, researchers from BCCS, Md Umair Akmal (left) and Ak. Mohd Naim (right) highlighted how the involvement of youths are critical in every aspect. This includes encouraging members of the public to be proactive in environmental sustainability and conservation by partaking in protection of wildlife, composting, engage in sustainable practice, and partake in local environmental initiatives.

Youth Climate Review

On 2nd November 2019, the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat organised a Youth Review for the Brunei National Climate Change Policy at the Prime Minister’s Office Building.

The session was attended by at least 60 youths from various backgrounds. Present as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya.

The socialisation of the policy is part of the Secretariat’s Whole of Nation approach where stakeholders are engaged to ensure a cohesive approach in the structuring of the Brunei National Climate Policy. The youth plays a vital role in tackling climate change, and youth organisations have the capacity to empower and encourage participation on all levels thus ensuring effective participation of youth in policy decision-making process is important for a comprehensive approach.

In line with the Whole of Nation approach, contribution and input pioneered by our young leaders is critical to lay the pathway for tomorrow’s generation.

7th Green Leaders Camp

The first ever youth outreach the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat took part in the Youth Climate Dialogue that was hosted by Green Brunei as part of their annual Green Leaders Camp in 5 August 2019. With the aim to critically assess environmental issues in Brunei, the theme for the 7th Green Leaders Camp was ‘#ThinkClimate’.

Spanning across 3 days, participants went across the country to take part in various environmental activities from taking a trip to the dense mangroves of Temburong to visiting Kunyit Lodge in the heart of the capital to get an insight on the importance of upcycling and recycling.

On the last day, the ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md Hussein, Minister of Energy where he highlighted the importance of economic growth with sustainable development. Others in attendance were the Deputy Minister of Development, Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries, and members of the public. In a brief engagement session, BCCS – represented by the Minister of Energy, answered questions from the audience on issues such as climate change, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
